Theatrum chemicum, praecipuos selectorum auctorum tractatus de chemiae et lapidis phylosophici, antiquitate, veritate, jure, praestantia, & operationibus continens...: volumen tertium. – [Heirs of Eberhard Zetzner] Argentorati [Strasbourg]: Sumptibus Heredum Eberh. Zetzneri, 1659. 859, [13] pages. 17.5cm x 11cm. Full vellum binding with gilt decorated boards, and red edges. Early edition of the third volume of the Theatrum Chemicum (a compendium of early alchemical writing) which contains treatises from various authors on the creation of the philosopher’s stone and the secret of the philosophers. Comes with an engraved title vignette and engraved initials throughout. The treatise “Operum mineralium, sive de lapide philosophico” from Joannes Isaac Hollandus features two full page engravings and numerous in-text engravings. There is also a foldout plate with text titled “Coelum philosophicum”. Rubbing, bumping, soiling, and wear to the boards and spine. The boards are a bit bent. There is a hole in the vellum covering the spine (see photos). Remnants of a removed seal in the front endpapers. Some browning and spotting throughout, as usual. The text and illustrations are clear, and the binding is solid. Overall, a clean copy in very good condition.
