Vignetta ai frontespizi, sguardie marmorizzate, segnalibri in seta verde, tagli spruzzati.
Bella legatura coeva in piena pelle con cornici dorate a tutti i piatti, dorso liscio con fregi in oro e titolo e numero di volume su tassello in marocchino verde.

Due piccoli volumi molto piacevoli.

Condizioni: Interni buoni (lievi arrossamenti uniformi solo per il tipo di carta); legatura un po' sfregata, con piccolo danno alla parte inferiore del dorso del vol. 2 (che presenta una parziale rottura a una delle cerniere). In generale buone condizioni.

S'il est une figure qui ne cessa de fasciner Voltaire, c'est assurément celle de Pierre le Grand. En 1731 déjà, l'Histoire de Charles XII laissait percevoir la séduction exercée par l'empereur de Russie sur le philosophe. Comme souvent pour la rédaction de ses ouvrages historiques, Voltaire utilisa des documents imprimés et manuscrits pour la rédaction de l'ouvrage. Ici, ce furent principalement des sources fournies par le conte Ivan Ivanovitch Schouvalov, chambellan et favori de l'Impératrice Elisabeth Petrovna, qui avait commandé l'oeuvre à Voltaire. Tous les matériaux nécessaires lui furent envoyés par l'Académie des sciences de Russie; Voltaire n'eut alors "qu'à plonger à pleines mains au milieu de richesses de toutes espèces": notes, récits, mémoires, extrait du journal de Pierre-le-Grand, ainsi "qu'une foule de pièces historiques et critiques".
