A stunning set of seven kokeshi dolls, all made from a beautiful type of wood and beautifully finished. Kokeshi originate from the early 1800s when woodworkers would use small spare pieces of wood to make toy dolls for their children. The shape of the doll and the circular decoration are made on a lathe, the head is later fitted and the rest of the details are hand painted. When these dolls caught the eye of travellers the woodworkers started making them as souvenirs, each region spawned their own unique style in shapes, colours and types of decorations. We estimate that these dolls were made in the late 1970s and early 1980s They are all signed by their respective artists. These dolls are between 46 and 21 cm tall
