Bronze Crucifix on Ebonised Wood - 48 cm - Bronze, Wood - 1950-1960

Bronze Crucifix on Ebonised Wood – 1950s – In Excellent Condition – No Reserve A deeply atmospheric and high-end quality mid-century crucifix, featuring a finely cast bronze Christ figure with a serene green patinated surface, mounted on a dark ebonised wooden cross. This expressive devotional artwork was salvaged from a church in Verviers, Wallonia (Belgium) during the 2024 post-flood restoration works, giving it an added layer of history and presence. The elongated limbs, stylised facial features and the refined modelling are characteristic of mid-20th-century ecclesiastical bronze work, where traditional symbolism met a modern, cleaner artistic line. The contrast between the soft green patina and the deep black wood creates an impressive decorative object that fits beautifully in both classic and contemporary interiors. A striking and contemplative wall piece for collectors of religious artefacts, bronze decor, or mid-century sacred art. Historical context In the 1950s, Belgian and Northern French churches frequently commissioned new liturgical objects as part of post-war reconstruction. Workshops produced bronzes with modernised proportions and patinas ranging from brown to vivid green. Combining these figures with ebonised wood crosses was a popular stylistic choice of the period, uniting tradition with a refined mid-century aesthetic. Condition In excellent vintage condition with minor traces of age. At the request of Catawiki, an additional close-up photo has been included: at the downside of the base next to the screw, the yellow glow confirms the figure is made of genuine bronze. Please see the photos for a precise impression of this lot. Details Period: 1950s Origin: Verviers, Wallonia, Belgium Material: Bronze on ebonised wood Dimensions: 48 × 34.5 × 4 cm (h × w × d) Weight: approx. 1.25 kg Provenance: Salvaged from a church in Verviers after the 2024 floodings A powerful mid-century devotional artwork with strong decorative appeal, ready to enrich any interior or collection.
