Original edition of this fine work dedicated to the history of London, published by the renowned English publisher Charles Knight (1791-1873).
Beautifully illustrated edition with wood engravings depicting views and plans of the city, monuments, genre scenes, portraits, coins, etc.
Complete in six parts, connected in three large volumes, containing descriptions of the main monuments, customs and manners, local booksellers, Jewish history, famous astrologers and the royal observatory, banks, the stock exchange, courts, churches, theaters, museums, exhibitions, and shops.
Bound in half-havana calfskin with corner pieces, flat endpapers, a fine cold-stamped border along the covers and edges, spine with raised bands highlighted by fine gold lines, title and volume pieces in leather with gold lettering, and speckled edges.
Very beautiful copy. Solid binding despite small stains on the leather and the covers, with bumped headbands and corners. Interior fresh and clean, with rare foxing, and paper well-white.
Charles Knight was an English editor and author. In addition to numerous illustrated editions of reference works, including a 1842 edition of William Shakespeare's works titled 'The Pictorial Shakespeare,' Knight published various illustrated books, such as 'Old England and The Land we Live in' and 'The Pictorial Gallery of Arts - Useful Arts, and London.'
