Description from the seller

Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington
1883
One volume edition. Profusely illustrated (12 full-page).
Thick 8vo publisher's original terracotta cloth pictorially decorated on cover and spine.
A handsome and well-preserved copy in a solid binding, with tight and strong hinges; the two folding coloured maps (approximately 65 x 50 cm) are in fine condition.
After the death of Livingstone, Stanley resolved to return to Africa and complete his work, as well as to address some of the issues introduced by Burton and Speke.
Livingstone considered it his mission to complete mapping and studying Central Africa, resolve some of the questions about the source of the Nile, and report on the activities of the slave traders, a practice that Livingstone actively spoke out against.
Criticized even at the time for what many considered his harsh treatment of the natives, he did manage to finish what Livingstone had started and open up Central Africa and Down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean.
Size of the book: 19 x 14 cm.
Weight about 750 grams.
