Tile - De Distel - 1910-1920

antique Dutch tile tableau created by the Plateelbakkerij De Distel of Amsterdam, Holland. This tableau is an exquisite example of the high-quality ceramic art produced by the factory, which was highly influential during the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and early Art Deco periods. The panel consists of multiple ceramic tiles ( 12 ) which are joined to form a single continuous image. The detailed scene is rendered in monochrome or sepia tones (manganese or black/brown) with a subtle use of color, primarily yellow/green along the foreground. The subject is a classic Dutch maritime scene, depicting a group of fishermen and fisherwomen in traditional dress on a quayside. They are shown carrying baskets, with a dog at their feet, and fishing boats and ships visible in the background against a light, atmospheric sky. This style of representing traditional Dutch life and professions was popular at the turn of the 20th century, often inspired by artists like Henri Cassiers.
