Parts of the Campo del Cielo meteorite, an iron meteorite, were first discovered in 1576 in present-day Argentina. A Spanish governor heard reports from indigenous Indians that iron had fallen from the sky. He then sent an expedition that brought back several fragments. The site, a water-scarce plain, was aptly named Campo del Cielo (Field of the Sky).
