The Ardbeg Anamorphic is the new experiment from Dr. Bill Lumsden. The barrel bottoms of the classic ex-bourbon barrels were removed and mechanically scored very deeply in order to create the largest possible wooden surface. The barrels were then burned to the “High Mocha” grade, which is said to give the whiskey new and intense aromas. The result is a multi-layered dram that alternates between four elements - sweet, smoked, herbal and spicy - all seamlessly blended into a fascinating taste experience. Aroma: Earthy, dusty and slightly biscuit-like on the nose, very unusual, almost like from a parallel universe. Soot-tarry notes are clear but restrained, balanced by silky vanilla notes. With a little water, many floral notes develop, including smoked vetiver root, anise, fennel, chrysanthemum and jasmine.
Taste: Peppery and warming, an eruption of fiery flavors preceded by spice, chili chocolate, bittersweet mocha, briar wood, birch tar, ground black pepper and smoked artichokes.
Finish: Soot-tarry notes develop into a crescendo of rich, smoky flavors with an incredibly lingering aftertaste of charcoal, bitter almonds and molasses.
