Estate Heritage:
Founded in 1750 and officially documented as early as 1761, Weingut Dönnhoff is one of Germany’s most historic and celebrated wine estates. Located in Oberhausen in the Nahe region, the estate has remained family-run for over 250 years. The modern legacy began with Hermann Dönnhoff in the early 20th century, who pioneered single-vineyard bottlings. His son Hermann Jr. expanded the estate’s cellar and vineyard holdings, and in 1953, the estate was awarded a Merit of Honor for outstanding viticultural achievement.
Helmut Dönnhoff, who took over in 1971, elevated the estate to international prominence, earning accolades such as German Winemaker of the Year in 1999. Today, the estate is led by Cornelius Dönnhoff, representing the fourth generation of winemakers, continuing the tradition of crafting Rieslings of elegance, precision, and terroir expression.
VDP Membership and Classification:
Dönnhoff is a distinguished member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP), Germany’s most prestigious association of elite wine producers. The VDP eagle on the capsule is a symbol of trust and quality recognized worldwide.
The Oberhäuser Leistenberg vineyard is classified as VDP.Erste Lage, denoting a premier cru site with exceptional terroir. Its southeast-facing slopes of decomposed slate produce Kabinett wines of remarkable finesse, minerality, and aging potential. These wines are known for their delicate sweetness, vibrant acidity, and crystalline purity.
Vintage Quality – 2004:
The 2004 vintage in Nahe is celebrated for its elegant, vibrant Kabinetts with excellent structure and longevity. A warm spring and golden autumn allowed grapes to ripen slowly, preserving acidity and aromatic complexity. These wines are now entering their peak, offering a harmonious balance of fruit, minerality, and freshness.
Tasting Profile:
Bright aromas of citrus, white peach, and green apple, layered with floral notes and a subtle hint of slate. On the palate, delicate sweetness is balanced by lively acidity and a long, mineral-driven finish. A classic Kabinett with precision and charm.
