Description from the seller

Very rare first edition of the comedy 'Scolastica' by Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533), without any typographical note but certainly printed in Venice in 1547 by Griffio, as can be deduced from the printer's device on the frontispiece and the date of the printer's dedication.

Cf. Agnelli-Ravegnani, II, p. 129: 'This, despite the contrary opinion of some bibliographers, is undoubtedly the editio princeps of the Scholastic.'

Originally titled 'The Students' and set in the university world, it remained unfinished at the fourth act. It was later completed by Gabriele Ariosto, who called it 'The Scholastic.'

Scholastic. Comedy by M. Lodovico Ariosto. Newly brought to light, Venice, Griffio, 1547.

PP.: [52] unnumbered cards. Complete.

Copy with pages in overall very good condition, with some marginal notes in an old hand and stains on a couple of pages that do not impair readability.

19th-century soft cardboard paperback, very well preserved. White endpapers.
