Description from the seller
Pompée Column
Alexandria, Egypt. February 2025. Located in the Karmouz district of Alexandria, the 29-meter granite column from Aswan was erected in 296 AD in honor of the Roman emperor Diocletian, who besieged the city for eight months to oust the usurper Lucius Domitius Domitianus. Latitude: 31.181943 | Longitude: 29.896521.
Paul Khayat, Black and White and Carrés d'Egypte
If black, white, and square impose a form and guide a style of writing, it is primarily through a timeless and poetic narrative that the photographer leads us. Used to playing with superimposition in double exposure—as seen in the Paris I and II series—he enriches his perspective with a more direct and minimalist approach, where backlit cut lines dialogue with an intense and striking contrast, creating a rhythm of emptiness and fullness that hypnotizes us.
The author
After earning a mathematics degree, in 1974 Paul Khayat set out to travel around the world, a journey that would last three years.
Upon his return, he worked as a shooter at the Sipa and Sygma agency laboratories, which he left to try his luck as a photographer.
In 1984, after six years of photojournalism (freelance, Imapress and Angeli agencies), he turned to writing and worked as a journalist for several magazines dedicated to photography (Photo Reporter, Photo Magazine, Photographies Magazine, and finally Photo for nine years).
Then, from 1999 to 2016, he was the editor of the high-tech sections of Paris Match.
Meanwhile, he returns to photography and exhibits his images in Normandy and Paris as well as on Facebook and Instagram. For the past six years, he has been working exclusively in film with a Rolleiflex, which he develops himself.
