Description from the seller
This patinated bronze sculpture with a marble base, created in the 19th century according to the standards of the French school, depicts a hunting scene with great dynamism and detail, where a bull is attacked by a pack of dogs. The composition, charged with tension and movement, reflects the 19th-century taste for naturalistic and dramatic themes, which were very prominent in French animal sculpture of the period.
The bull, positioned at the center of the scene, appears in a defensive stance, with its head lowered, tense muscles, and horns in an attack position. Around it, several dogs harass it from different directions, captured in agile and aggressive poses that convey the intensity of the confrontation. The meticulous modeling of the bodies, the animals' expressions, and the treatment of textures — from the fur to the tense skin of the bull — demonstrate remarkable technical mastery.
The oval marble base, polished and warm in tone, serves as an elegant support and contrasts with the dark bronze, framing the scene like a high-level decorative art piece. Elements such as leaves and reliefs in the terrain add a naturalistic context that enhances the setting.
This type of sculpture, influenced by artists such as Antoine-Louis Barye and other exponents of French animalier realism, was highly valued in bourgeois salons and private collections, where both technical skill and expressive strength of hunting scenes were appreciated. The piece combines academic rigor with a romantic sensitivity towards nature and drama, making it a representative example of 19th-century French sculptural art.
