Description from the seller
René Julien (1937–2016)
Górnik bronze cast
Description of the work
We present the exceptional figurine 'Mijnwerker' by Belgian sculptor René Julien, one of the most outstanding creators of the 20th century in Belgium. The sculpture is made of metal cast, mounted on a solid black marble pedestal. The entire piece weighs 2.6 kg, and the height with the pedestal is 28 cm, with the pedestal measuring 8 × 8 cm.
The figurine depicts a miner in a characteristic outfit, holding a shovel in his hand. The completely black patina perfectly captures the atmosphere of work in a mine and gives the piece an authentic, dramatic expression. The back of the shovel bears the signature René Julien, confirming the authorship, although it is rendered in a subtle form, which is typical for the artist's small casts. The condition is very good.
Artist's biography
René Julien was born in 1937 in Hollogne-aux-Pierres, Belgium. From a young age, he displayed exceptional artistic talent, which he developed in both painting and sculpture. Throughout his career, Julien primarily focused on figurative sculpture, creating both small figurines and larger compositions. His works were often cast in bronze and other metals, and a distinctive feature of his style was his attention to detail and the naturalistic portrayal of figures.
Julien was active in Belgian galleries, and his works frequently appeared at auctions both domestically and internationally. His sculptures depicting workers, including miners, reflect the artist's respect for everyday human effort and also demonstrate masterful sculptural technique.
