(After) Henri Matisse (1869-1954) - "The Flowing Hair, 1952"

- Henri Matisse (after), authorized offset lithograph on textured matte paper. (300gsm approx.). 2000s. - Signed in the plate. - Embossed stamp. - Stamp on verso. - Condition: excellent. Never framed, never exposed. - Size: 43 x 49cm. - Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century and a leading figure in modern art. Known for his revolutionary use of color, form, and line, Matisse was a key pioneer of the Fauvist movement early in his career, but his most celebrated and innovative work came later in life with his development of cut-outs a bold and radically simplified form of expression. In his final years, when health issues prevented him from painting traditionally, Matisse turned to paper cut-outs, a technique he called “painting with scissors.” These works, known as gouaches découpées, featured vibrant, abstracted shapes and figures, often inspired by the human body, nature, and dance. This late period is now considered one of the most original and visionary phases of his career. One iconic work from this series is The Flowing Hair (1952), a striking composition featuring a female figure formed from large, fluid blue shapes on a white background. The figure appears to be in motion, with sweeping lines representing long hair that curves and flows dynamically across the paper. The simplicity and clarity of the form evoke both elegance and energy, embodying Matisse’s mastery of movement, rhythm, and purity of line. It also reflects his lifelong fascination with the female form and expressive silhouette. Matisse’s artworks are highly valued in the art market. His works have fetched over $40 million at auction, and his "cut-outs" once viewed as experimental are now considered masterpieces in their own right. Major museums hold his cut-out works in their permanent collections. The Flowing Hair, with its graceful contours and confident abstraction, is a quintessential example of Matisse’s late genius, embodying the spirit of renewal, joy, and bold creativity that defined his final years.
