Description from the seller

Blaise PASCAL
Thoughts of M. Pascal on Religion and on some other subjects
In Paris, at Guillaume Desprez's, 1670

A volume in-12 (16x9 cm) of [40] pages + 358 pages (numbered 334) + [10] pages of table (complete)

Brown calf granite from the period, with a back featuring 5 decorated nerves, gilded title, and rollers on the cuts.

It was long believed that this edition was the original [Brunet, 398]. In fact, it is the true second edition dating from the original, which also exists without an edition mention on the title page.

One can distinguish Desprez editions from their counterfeits by the vignette found on leaf A, which depicts the Sorbonne with the motto 'Pendent opera interrupta,' and which is clearly present here. Our copy has all the characteristics of the second edition, notably the misnumbering error (quires Ee and Ff numbered 307 to 330 between pages 312 and 313).

Absent covers, rubbed nerves, small splits at the first bindings. Manuscript ex-libris and seal on the title page, mention 'Bibl. des profess.' on the second leaf.

The interior is in good condition, complete, and spacious, with a margin of 155 mm.
