Chinese glazed stoneware plate with a calligraphic Shou character and brush decorations, Qing Dynasty (Southern China), late 19th century, ca. 1880–1930, 29.5 x 29.5 cm with 5.5 cm depth, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Chinese dish in glazed stoneware with calligraphic character 'Shou' and brush decorations – Southern China, late Qing / early Republic period (ca. 1880–1930)
Refined Chinese stoneware in red-bodied gres, covered by a slightly irregular gray-celadon glaze and decorated with brushwork in iron oxide beneath the glaze. In the center, the character 壽 'shou', symbol of longevity and prosperity, is inscribed within a circular medallion, while the rim is adorned with an elegant pattern of scrolls, free brushstrokes, and stylized botanical motifs, typical of popular kilns from southern China during the late Qing Empire or the early years of the Republic of China. The back, fully glazed and marked by slight drips, micro-iron spots, and firing irregularities, confirms a traditional production not courtly but of high artisanal quality. The object, simple and harmonious, fully expresses the spontaneous aesthetic of southern ceramics from this period, characterized by soft surfaces, swift calligraphic touches, and subdued colors.
The condition is consistent with the age and shows the typical traces of cooking and use that enhance its material authenticity.
