Description from the seller
Pair of Still Lifes
School: European School
Author: Torres de Torres (20th century)
20th-century Spanish painter known for his intimate and serene compositions, in which still lifes and landscapes predominate. His work stands out for the loose brushwork, the balanced use of light, and the ability to give a nearly sculptural character to the depicted objects.
Style: Realist
Technique: Oil on canvas
A pair of still life paintings dated 1992 and 1996 is presented, characteristic of Torres de Torres's plastic language, where the artist works with the pictorial material with chromatic sobriety and a meticulous observation of the natural.
Table 1 (1996):
The composition depicts a set of cherries arranged informally on a surface illuminated from the side. The artist employs a warm palette, contrasted with a darkened background, which adds depth and enhances the natural shine of the fruits. The brushwork is visible, vibrant, and gestural, creating a rich and expressive texture. The atmosphere invites silent contemplation, typical of classic still lifes reinterpreted from a contemporary perspective.
Table 2 (1992):
This work depicts a group of onions in reddish and ochre tones, arranged in a more compact composition. The chiaroscuro carefully models the volumes, creating an effect of weight and physical presence. The neutral background helps focus attention on the tactile quality of the surfaces, where highlights, glazes, and small irregularities characteristic of a direct study of the object can be appreciated.
Both works are presented in classic wooden frames, the first with a twisted design of rustic air, and the second with a granular decorative molding and an inner fillet. Both frames adequately complement the traditional aesthetic of the compositions.
The frame comes as a gift. It may be damaged during transport even if it is properly packaged.
