Shino Ware Plate by Toshisada Wakao - Ceramic - Toshisada Wakao / 若尾利貞 (1933–2012) - Japan - Shōwa period (1926-1989)

A plate in ivory white, traced with lines of russet that map time and fire. This circular plate presents a shallow form with a gently curved rim. The surface is finished in a creamy white glaze with areas of reddish-brown coloration appearing along organic, branching lines. Small dark specks are distributed throughout the glaze. The rim shows a slight undulation. The underside displays an unglazed foot ring with traces of reddish-brown clay visible. The work is housed in a wooden box with ink inscriptions reading "Shino plate" (志野皿) and "Wakao" (若尾) with a red seal, accompanied by a leaflet containing the author's brief biography. About Toshisada Wakao Toshisada Wakao (1933–2012) was a Japanese ceramic artist specializing in Shino ware, one of the most celebrated styles of Mino ceramics. Born in Gifu Prefecture, the historic heartland of Mino pottery, Wakao dedicated his career to exploring and refining the Shino tradition that flourished during the Momoyama period. Shino ware is characterized by its thick white feldspar glaze, which creates a soft, tactile surface and allows for natural color variations during firing. Wakao's works honor the aesthetic principles of wabi-sabi while demonstrating technical mastery in glaze application and firing techniques. His pieces were exhibited in Japan and appreciated by collectors of contemporary Japanese ceramics. Wakao contributed to the continuation of Mino pottery traditions into the modern era.
