Description from the seller

APULEE
The Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass by Apuleius, a Platonist philosopher, with The Demon of Socrates
Paris, Michel Brunet, 1736

Two volumes in-12 (17 x 10 cm) by [10], xiv, 411 and [2], 452, [4], [4] pages.

The bookseller Brunet's catalog (4 pages after approval and privilege) has been preserved at the end of the work, which is very rare for a binding of that period.

Edition adorned with 12 full-page illustrations by Desmaretz, engraved by Thomassin, at the head of each book of The Golden Ass and Socrates' Demon.

Full dark brown calf from the period, with a five-rib spine decorated with gilt, gold titles and tooling on garnet-colored morocco pieces, gilded roulette on the edges, red edges, marbled shell guards.

The translation is by Compain de Saint-Martin. He is also responsible for the notes and comments that follow each book, which provide many details about the author's era and antiquity.

Scuffs, missing top edges, but solid binding.

Clean interior, in good condition.
