In Paris - 1678 -
At Estienne Michallet
(4), 224 pages.
120 - 140 X 8 cm.
The exciting love story of a beautiful Jewish woman from Amsterdam with a younger brother of the Lusignano house.
This specimen, identical to the copy kept at the:
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
It demonstrates, as extensively documented, that this is the rare and original edition.
In the same year, at least two other editions were printed (pirated?).
GRAESSE IV 475
BRUNET III 1596
Published anonymously in 1678, the
'Memoires d’Hollande' were the subject of a nineteenth-century debate on attribution.
Often associated with Madame
de La Fayette (Tchemerzine III, 846) or a
Sandras de Courtilz, the opera is said to have been written by Pierre-Daniel Huet, bishop of Avranches (Lever, La Fiction narrative en prose).
In the 17th century, 1976, p. 263.
GRAESSE IV 475
The discussions quickly turned into a fight among scholars, the fiercest there has been, according to many critics.
In a very elegant style, the novel tells the love story of a beautiful Jewish woman from Amsterdam with a younger brother of the House of Lusignano.
The opera is very interesting for more than one reason: it depicts, through the romantic novel, life in the Netherlands around the middle of the 17th century.
It is one of the few novels from the 1600s that dares to confront social reality in this way.
What it is, and the work deserves to be distinguished.
the invention of French romantic literature.
The book is also of interest for the history and topography of the Netherlands.
Beautiful and delightful coeval binding in full leather, perfectly preserved.
In excellent condition, the interior preservation is also outstanding, with fresh, clean, and untouched documents.
Beautiful brand with an armillary sphere on the frontispiece.
Small antique stamp (possibly noble) on the back side (see photo).
Keep the original guards.
Excellent copy, complete and original in every part.
Settled. Complete.
