This head of Seneca is a faithful bronze reproduction of a Roman bust dating from the late 1st century BC. Discovered in Herculaneum in 1754, the original is now housed at the Archaeological Museum of Naples.

It is believed that the bust depicts Lucio Anneo Seneca, a renowned Roman philosopher and a central figure in the governance of the empire during Nero's rule, alongside Agrippina.

Historical insights

Seneca argued that political action should be guided by aristocratic principles to ensure positive outcomes. His Stoic philosophy promoted control over destructive emotions, such as anger and pain, and a balance between wealth and virtue. For Seneca, man should not shy away from difficulties but face them with courage of spirit. This ideal of self-sufficiency, called autarkeia, represented detachment from bodily influences and the achievement of complete inner autonomy.
