Early in his career, he practiced history painting and experimented with symbolism, then turned to Orientalism after discovering Algeria in 1894. Admired by his contemporaries, particularly his stepfather Théodore de Banville and Conan Doyle, he was an influential member of the Society of Orientalist Painters.
Alongside his painting, he creates numerous posters for the opera and becomes a highly sought-after illustrator in the publishing field.
