Edition adorned with numerous illustrations by Georges Rochegrosse
engraved on wood by Barbant, Deloche, Gaspérini.
A portrait of the author on the frontispiece, 6 full-page illustrations, chapter headpieces, and over 150 banners.
Georges Rochegrosse (1859-1938): adopted son of Théodore de Banville, he mingled with artists and writers hosted by his stepfather at his home: Paul Verlaine, Stéphane Mallarmé, Arthur Rimbaud, Victor Hugo, and Gustave Flaubert. Early in his career, he practiced history painting and experimented with symbolism, then turned to Orientalism after discovering Algeria in 1894. Admired by his contemporaries, particularly his stepfather Théodore de Banville and Conan Doyle, he was an influential member of the Society of Orientalist Painters.
Alongside his painting, he creates numerous posters for the opera and becomes a highly sought-after illustrator in the publishing field.
Paperback, flap cover, under crystal paper.
