Description from the seller
This pair of two-branch candelabra belongs to the 'Impérial' range launched by Val Saint Lambert in 1953 and is representative of the stylistic renewal of the crystal manufacturer during the post-war decades. Their broad silhouette, based on arched lines and a strongly geometric pedestal, illustrates VSL's ambition to combine monumentality, transparency, and contemporary elegance in its clear crystal creations. Each piece is signed 'VAL ST LAMBERT' at the tip beneath the base, guaranteeing authentic craftsmanship.
Each candelabrum consists of three elements forming a harmonious balance. The two branches, wide and arched, originate from a central shaft sculpted in a fan shape — a ribbed form reminiscent of a stylized plume, a recurring decorative element in the Imperial range. The arms rise in two perfectly symmetrical arcs, whose broad curvature enhances the visual fluidity of the crystal. They end with two decagonal bobèches, finely cut, with walls featuring regular vertical facets; these deeply molded bobèches securely hold the candles while multiplying the light reflections.
The entire assembly rests on a geometric terrace with a lozengic base, cut into sharp planes; this heavy and stable pedestal gives the candelabra a sculptural presence and ensures perfect support. The junction between the arms and the central shape — this radiating shell or moulded fan — constitutes the main visual element, offering a dynamic reading of the crystal as light passes through the facets.
The condition of the two pieces is very good. The first candelabrum retains its original label, as well as some light signs of use, discreet and consistent with its age. The second shows small chips on the bobèches and on the central fan-shaped part, without affecting the stability or the overall appearance of the model. It also bears traces of its former round label on the terrace.
The set remains very clear, with a crystal that is transparent, resonant, and well polished.
In the 1960s, Val Saint Lambert underwent a period of modernization marked by the introduction of new ranges and a reinterpretation of traditional decorative language. After the geometric lines of Art Deco and the post-war functionalism, the house turned towards more architectural and sculptural creations, playing with the scale of volumes, the purity of clear crystal, and more contemporary shapes. The 'Impérial' range, launched in 1966, fully embodies this dynamic: it offers a crystal with bold lines, extensively faceted, designed to capture and redistribute light with maximum brilliance. These two-branch candelabra are a perfect illustration, demonstrating the technical expertise and sense of design that characterized Val Saint Lambert at that time.
The average dimensions are:
Length: 20.1 centimeters.
Height: 11.2 centimeters.
Total weight of the set: 1500 grams.
