Rare polychrome figure of the Virgin Mary, likely Spanish – 16th/17th century
A very charming and expressive devotional sculpture depicting the Virgin standing on a cluster of clouds. The figure retains traces of its original polychrome, including deep blue and red pigments. Very notable are the inlaid glass eyes, a detail frequently associated with Spanish sculpture of the Renaissance and early Baroque period.
Carved from a light sedimentary stone (likely limestone) with subtle remains of gilding in the folds of the drapery. Mounted on a modern transparent base for display (included).
Condition: Historic wear, losses to polychrome, minor chips and losses consistent with age such as the hands. The figure remains stable, with a strong devotional presence.
Height: approx. 19.4 cm including base
Provenance: Private Belgian collection
A rare and atmospheric small devotional sculpture an excellent example for collectors of early European religious art.
