Opale aus Australien sind bereits seit Langem bekannt. Seit einigen Jahren stiehlt ihnen nun aber eine neue Varietät aus Äthiopien ein wenig die Schau: Der Welo-Opal! Dieser Stein ist transluzent und besticht durch seine charakteristischen, einzigartigen Lichtreflexe. Entdeckt wurde er in der Bergregion Semien Wollo im Nordosten Äthiopiens. Der exakte Zeitpunkt des Fundes ist jedoch nicht bekannt. Einige Quellen datieren die Einführung des Welo-Opals auf dem Markt von Nairobi auf das Jahr 1993. Als Entdecker gilt der Chemiker Tilahun Yohannes und bereits 1994 berichtet der Geologe Dr. N. Barot in einem Artikel in der „ICA Gazette“ von dieser Edelstein-Neuheit. Der Abbau lief langsam an, 1997 wurden lediglich 10 Kilo gefördert. Die Edelsteinschleiferei  Eyaopal aus Addis-Abeba schliff daraus 400 Gramm. Noch im selben Jahr wurde der Welo-Opal auf der internationalen Mineralienmesse in Sainte-Marie präsentiert und ein Jahr später zeigte Eyaopal 350 geschliffene Opale auf der Fachmesse in Tucson. 2008 begann der kommerzielle Abbau. Ein neuer Star unter den Opalen war geboren.
