Cabinet - Geelhout

This is a stylish cabinet from the Empire period (1810-1830).
I can't say whether this piece of furniture comes from the Netherlands, England, or South Africa.
The furniture making has a Dutch feel; the style could just as easily be Regancy—the hardware is English, in any case—or African.
Because South Africa was a melting pot of Dutch and English at the time.

What immediately stands out is the special wood—it's called Geelhout (yellowwood) and comes from South Africa.
Podocarpus latifolius
This tree is the national symbol of South Africa and is becoming rare.
It is estimated that under natural conditions at Knysna, it takes between 160 and 230 years for the tree to reach a mature trunk diameter of 35 to 50 cm.[4]

Revolutionary was the disappearance of the rounded shapes, replaced by sleek forms.

This cabinet has a very sleek design, yet is beautifully crafted, with sleek, genuine ebony edging that contrasts beautifully with the light wood.

The interior was later updated with additional shelves.

This allows for more practical storage of clothing and other items.

The interior back is also a later addition.

But it's not noticeable, especially when the cabinet is used as intended – for storing clothes.
