Hedwig Pauwels (born 1934) was born in Sint-Niklaas but has lived in Hasselt for over half a century. He studied line drawing and architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sint-Niklaas and specialized in decorative arts at Sint-Lucas in Ghent. Most of his ex-libris designs are a combination of etching and aquatint, but he has also created works in screen printing, lithography, and woodcut.
Because it quickly became clear that he excels as a portrait artist, collectors increasingly asked him to create a portrait ex-libris. As an ex-libris designer, Hedwig Pauwels enjoys a great reputation worldwide.
