Description from the seller
Quite rare, antique Russian icon of St. Basil from the 19th century.
Hand-painted on a wooden panel with egg tempera paints on a chalk ground and gold leafing. A typical method of icon creation in 18th and 19th century Tsarist Russia. The motif is rather rare and highly valued in the Orthodox Church.
With expertise from Christine Hähn. She previously created expert reports for high-quality antique Russian icons.
This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed (see photos).
Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic crackles (see photos).
Partial restorations and minor corrections are present (see photos). The face of the saint is especially expressive and striking (see photos). The icon is inscribed. The inscriptions are clearly legible.
The icon was created around 1850-1880 in Central Russia. The icon comes from a home iconostasis and has been set into new wood. Please refer to the expertise for further details.
The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos).
All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.
Dimensions: 22x10x1.7 cm
