Corneille, Tortue Aquatique, 1997, aquagravure in the Cobra style, hand-signed, good condition, limited edition 47/60, 98 × 77 cm framed (73 × 53 cm unframed), Netherlands origin, sold by Galerie, depicting animals in the wild.
Description from the seller
Corneille (1922–2010) was a co-founder of the CoBrA movement and an important innovator in post-war art. His work evolved from abstract to figurative, with recurring themes such as birds, women, and flowers. This colorful silkscreen print is a fine example of his later style.
In this expressive aquagravure, Corneille displays his recognizable visual language: playful, colorful, and full of symbolism. The central green figure – half animal, half fantasy creature – seems to move within a lively space of red, yellow, and blue. The organic shapes, strong contrasts, and thick black lines create a dynamic composition full of energy and rhythm.
The technique of aquagravure enhances the sensory power of the work: the relief-like texture adds depth, while the intense colors evoke an almost tangible vitality. The work breathes the optimistic spirit of Corneille’s oeuvre – a celebration of imagination, freedom, and the joy of creation.
