His mother was 15 years old when he was born, and his father left her very early. He played basketball at Georgetown University. Iverson was first drafted in 1996 by the Philadelphia 76ers. He played there for ten years. He wore number 3. Iverson was especially known for his speed, his lay-ups, and his crossovers. In his first season, he was voted Rookie of the Year (1996-97), and in 2001, he was chosen as the NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP). On October 26, 2010, Yahoo! Sport reported that Iverson agreed to a two-year contract worth $4 million net per year with the Turkish basketball club Beşiktaş JK. The club announced the signing during a press conference in New York on October 29, 2010. Iverson made his debut for Beşiktaş on November 16, 2010, during a Eurocup match against the Serbian team Hemofarm. Iverson scored 15 points in 23 minutes.

In August 2013, Iverson ended his playing career.
