Vlaho Bukovac - real name: Biagio Faggioni - was born in Cavtat on the Dalmatian coast. He studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris where he was taught by Alexandre Cabanel. His realistic paintings - especially his portraits of women - achieved great succes at the Paris Salon and also in England. Over time his style oscillated between realism, impressionism, Jugendstil and pointillism. Bukovac made an important contribution to the cultural life in his homeland Croatia. In 1903 he moved to Prague where he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts.
