This canvas depicts a landscape from southern France, dominated by a Provençal house with red roofs and a garden.
Full of flowering trees. The palm tree, the cypresses, and the warm hues set the scene in Provence or on the

Successive small wall, orchard, building, and hills creating a gentle and orderly depth. The touch, thick and
Vibrant, it reveals a free but controlled gesture. The pastel colors and blended transitions convey an atmosphere.
calm, bright, and naturalistic.
Stylistic analysis
Style: Impressionist realism, heir to the academic tradition but open to light effects.
Palette: silver verts, soft ochres, blue-greys, and orange-reds for the roofs.
Light superpositions, moderate impasto, work of light with small touches.
Ambiance: poetic and contemplative, imbued with southern serenity.
Historical context:
Emmanuel-Charles Bénézit, especially known as an art historian, also pursued a career as a painter.
Formed in the tradition of French realism, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français at the end of the 19th century. His mature works show an evolution towards light and color, inspired by southern landscapes. This painting, dated around 1905–1915, belongs to that late period, where he combines the rigor of drawing with impressionist sensitivity.
This luminous composition illustrates the painter's Mediterranean vein, where the rigor of construction combines with impressionist sensitivity. Through the subtlety of its palette and mastery of light, Bénézit reveals a precise and poetic observer's view of the nature of the Midi.
