【Product details】
A traditional Boys’ Day celebration set from the Showa or Heisei period, consisting of a bow and sword display, an ornate brocade vest, and a ceremonial headband. These items were displayed during the 5 May festival to wish for a boy’s healthy growth, protection, and good fortune.
The bow and arrows represent driving away evil spirits and misfortune. In particular, arrows are believed to pierce through negativity and clear the path for a bright future, which is why they are prominently included in Boys’ Day sets. The sword symbolises courage and protection as a guardian weapon. This custom originated from samurai households of the Kamakura–Muromachi periods, where symbolic weapons were placed to guard the family. In the standard arrangement, the bow is placed on the left and the sword on the right.
The brocade vest is woven with dragon roundels, plum blossoms, pine, bellflowers, and iris. Dragons convey strength and good fortune, plum blossoms express endurance and renewal, pine signifies longevity, bellflowers represent integrity, and iris is associated with protection and the warding off of harmful influences. The bow is decorated with a phoenix in raised relief, symbolising virtue, auspicious fortune, and rebirth. The sword fittings feature raised dragon motifs, reflecting strength and protective power.
There is age-related wear, including surface rubbing on the vest, partial lifting of the adhesive on the chest ornament, a small crack on the sword stand, some slackness in the bowstring, minor paint loss on the arrows, and splitting at the joints of the feathers. Minor blemishes are present overall, but the set remains in good used condition for a Showa-period festival display.
