Description from the seller
In 1952, Willy and Karel decided to create a comic strip inspired by the then-popular television dog Lassie. The first strips appeared in 1952 in the French-language newspaper La Libre Belgique and in 1953 for the first time in Dutch, in De Standaard and the Katholieke Illustratie, in black and white with a support color, later in four-color printing. Shortly thereafter, the first albums were published. The series also became known in Germany and was a huge success there. The demand in the German market was so high that a separate team was assigned to draw Bessy strips for Germany. Ultimately, 992 Bessy albums were published in Germany, including 50 reprints, an absolute record for Studio Vandersteen. However, in 1967, Karel Verschuere decided to step down, although he still produced a few albums on a freelance basis. In total, 164 Dutch-language and 151 French-language episodes were published. The series also appeared in Sweden, but there under the name Bessie. There are 92 albums published in Swedish. Due to mass production, which consequently led to lower quality, the German editions ended in 1985, and the Bessy team disbanded. This team had a changing composition. Besides Verschuere, who drew at least 35 stories, Eduard De Rop (at least 8 stories), Frank Sels (at least 48 stories), Bob Vandersteen (at least 46 stories), Walter Laureysens (at least 136 stories), Jean Bosco Safari (at least 14 stories), Jeff Broeckx (at least 72 stories), Marcel Rouffa (15 stories), Michel Mahy (at least 1 story), and Dodo (at least 5 stories) worked on the series.
By the way: the series was so successful at the time that in 1961, a Bessy lemonade was even launched on the market, produced by the HOBSOR brewery from Hoboken. The logo on bottles and crates was designed by Vandersteen.
We are closed during the holidays on December 25 and 26, 2025, and on January 1 and 2, 2026.
We wish you happy holidays and a prosperous new year!
