First edition Osgood's name at base of spine and verso title page. Bound in publisher's dark green vertically-ribbed hunter green cloth, with titling and decorative elements stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; top edge gilt. with the floral gilt T/H decorative monogram on the upper cover, deckle edges untrimmed. Illustrated with "The Christminster" frontispiece by Henry Macbeth-Raeburn and map of Wessex at rear. Fair with complete text pages and illustrations. Boards slightly bowed and chipped in corners, small tear on upper spine, pages tanned but text clear, a few pages dampstained and slightly foxed. A highly collectible first edition copy of Thomas Hardy's last completed novel, which received harsh public backlash for its scandalous attack on class, marriage and wedlock. 40x28cm, 523 pages includes 5 blank pages bound after final map illustration.
