Aloysius Bertrand - Gaspard de la nuit - Paris, Editions de l'Odéon 1950 - XXVI, 149pp. - 27 x 21 cm

Very nice set with quarto volume - wrapper folded and illustrated in folder and hardcover casing in leather vellum style; casing illustrated on one side with multiple small golden imps and in the middle 2 devils leaning on a coat of arms with witch brooms and a motto ‘Nox and Solitudo-Plence sut diabolo’; and on the other side 2 unicorns backed by a coat of arms with the cross and religious inscriptions, slipcase with title embossed in length; paperback on thick Arches paper, with flaps; superbly illustrated in colour on the first cover with illuminations in blue, included dragons, devils, witches, strange birds, small characters etc...; loose leaves inside. Friction of use on casing and the slipcase (not too serious) on the corners, borders, spine and covers; binding in good condition, very fresh. inside and enriched with beautiful and delicate miniatures of André Hubert; initials, end pieces also very beautiful - one of the two hundred and ten copies on vellum of Rives tinted numbered 91-300. This book is numbered 277.
 Raymond Schwab says about the book in substance and in the foreword ‘... jusqu'à maintenant pas une édition illustrée n'a paru assortie au rang du livre et aux rêves de l'auteur. The work however fécondait at least two poets insignia, Baudelaire and Mallarmé: the first discovered at 21 and it will be with Edgard Poe, one of its decisive influences; the second falls to 23 years, and it will be with Vathek, one of the poles of his reveries...’
Completed print on October 15, 1950, on the Presses of ‘La Ruche’; printing of the engravings Georges Duval. The miniatures were reproduced by hand in the workshops of R. Lecourt, à l'Enseigne du Coloris Moderne.
