Marc Jans

Mark Andrew Spitz (10th February 1950 in Modesto, California) is an American retired swimmer. He won seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games, and set new world records in all those victories. He was the first athlete in Olympic history to achieve such a feat in a single edition of the Games (surpassed only by fellow American Michael Phelps at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing). Despite all this success, Spitz retired from competition when he was only 22 years old to work in real estate. He is considered as one the greatest Olympic athletes of all time.

He learned to swim at the age of two, while living in Hawaii, thanks to his father Arnold. He studied at the University of Indiana.

He won the Sullivan Howard award in 1971, and the Swimmer of the Year award in 1972. In 2005, Mark Spitz was appointed standard bearer of the USA delegation at the 17th Maccabiah Games.

He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife Suzy Weiner and their two children, Matthew (born in 1981, and Justin, born in 1991).
