Crest Mask - Ekoi / Ejagham - Nigeria
The Ejagham or Ekoi tribe, located in southeastern Nigeria or western Cameroon, is the origin of a unique and rather surprising form of art: crests representing heads covered with antelope skin.
These crests are often single-faced or janiform heads, whose hair can be of human origin. This is presumably a substitute for real skulls that dancers once wore (before the advent of colonialism, Tangale tribes still practiced the worship of trophy heads and anthropophagy).
These crests are decorated with large spirals reproducing a very fashionable hairstyle in the Cross River region.
The Ejagham people are considered to be at the origin of the creation of this technique of leather on wood, which is also found in the neighbouring populations (Idoma, Bangwa, Boki, Igala ...).
