Bruno Donzelli was born in Naples on 12 April 1941. At a very young age, when he was only twenty-one, he held a solo exhibition at Galleria del Fiorino in Florence in 1962, after having been present in 1960 at the San Fedele Prize in Milan, at the Termoli Prize, and in 1962 at the Prize organised by the Ministry of Public Education and held at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome. In 1963 he held a solo exhibition at Galleria Centro Arte in Genoa and was invited to the Spoleto Prize, the Marche Prize in Ancona, and also to the Michetti Prize. In 1964 he held several solo exhibitions, in Bologna at Galleria 2000, in Naples at the gallery Il Centro and at the gallery Il Paladino in Palermo. The works created by the artist in the mid-sixties were influenced by the atmosphere animated by Pop Art innovations, by an ironic density, with systems that reused the conversational sense of comics. These are the works that he displayed in 1965 both during the exhibition “La Critica e la Giovane Pittura italiana”, held at Galleria Ferrari in Verona, and the exhibition “Neapel ‘65”, organised in Berlin by the Wirth gallery. In 1966 he was invited by Enrico Crispolti to the exhibition “8 Pittori Napoletani” organised at Galleria Sebastiani in Milan, the exhibition “Le Dimensioni del linguaggio figurale oggi”, held in Naples, and the exhibition “Aspetti del ‘ritorno alle cose stesse’” curated by Renato Barilli and held in the old shipyards of Amalfi. In 1967 he held a solo exhibition at the gallery L’Agrifoglio in Milan, presented in catalogue by Enrico Crispolti, and he was invited to the Experimental Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin. In the late sixties, Donzelli’s attention shifted towards the “sphere of the fantastic”, increased by a sort of expressionistic dynamism, such as to make his pictorial system more ironic. In 1968 he organised a solo exhibition at the gallery Il Girasole in Rome. He was invited to many events, including the Spoleto Prize. With the experiences of the early seventies, the artist paid attention to the reinterpretation of images taken from the repertoire of the avant-gardes of our century, and this is proven by paintings such as “Nuove Piazze d’Italia”, 1970, works that he displayed in solo exhibitions in Florence and Genoa. In 1972 he was present at the “Vll Rassegna d’Arte del Mezzogiorno” organised in Naples at Villa Pignatelli; in the same year he held a solo exhibition at the gallery Due Mondi in Rome, presented by Eugenio Miccini. In 1973 he was invited to the V International Kunstmesse in Berlin, to the “Post Fumettum natum” exhibition, organised at the gallery La Margherita in Rome and curated by Giorgio Di Genova, while in 1974 he was present at the international exhibition of Acireale entitled “Ironia come Alternativa”. In 1977 the Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara hosted his big solo exhibition curated by Roberto Sanesi: the works of these years had the “art register” as their central theme, an expression containing the accurate analysis that Donzelli made on events and protagonists of the art of our century. A trail that would lead him to the lucky series “Ormare” over time. It was started between 1979 and 1980 and partly displayed during the exhibition organised by Civica Galleria d’Arte Contemporanea, Ascoli Piceno, in 1981. In this exhibition the artist displayed works such as “Cronologia dell’arte”, 1980, and “Ormare”, 1981, from which a new pictorial material was evident, rich in thickness and signs that were present in the works that Donzelli created throughout the eighties. In 1984 he started the series to which he later gave the title of “Siparietti impertinenti”: this period included paintings such as “Lontano dechirichiano”, 1985, “Guantiera con babà” and “Quadro di Carrà”, 1986, “Tavolozza del Novecento”, 1987, “Morandiana (con natura morta italiana)”. Works from this series were also displayed during the solo exhibitions at Arte Borgogna in Milan, Scaletta in Reggio Emilia, Ère du Verseau in Paris, Gianicolo in Perugia, Art Diffusion in Düsseldorf, gallery Muller in Neuchâtel, Zum Kunos Thorag in Basel, gallery Loanne in Geneva, and then Institut français in Naples in 1989. An experience that proposed passages of pictorial pieces, of an imaginative anthology, on which the artist intervened with irony. In 1988 he was present at the “Saturnus” exhibition curated by G. Lemaire at the Université de Toulouse le Mirail, and later at the Pablo Gargallo Museum in Zaragoza, at the Maeght gallery in Paris in the exhibition “Les Cafés littéraires”. Since 1989 he has been devoting himself also to ceramic works, creating unique pieces and series of multiples painted by hand in Deruta, Perugia. In 1991 he created the sets and costumes for “Folli notti a Pietroburgo” for the Teatro dell’Orologio in Rome, under the direction of Gianfranco Evangelista, taken from “White Nights” by Dostojevskij. In the following years he organised many solo exhibitions in the main European cities: Paris, Geneva, Milan, Rome, Düsseldorf, Bologna, Florence, Neuchâtel, Genoa, Venice, Nice, Parma, Perugia, Verona, Cologne, Basel, Munich, Turin and others. In 1997, for a solo exhibition at Galleria Arte Borgogna in Milan, the Donzelli monograph by Mazzotta was presented, curated by Luciano Caprile. In November 1998, the Fall gallery in Paris organised an exhaustive solo exhibition of his works, that was a huge success. In 1999 he made the Buffetti calendar. Since 2000, the Giovanni Di Summa gallery in Rome has been archiving his works for a future publication of the general catalogue. In February 2000, in the presence of over two thousand people, a big anthological exhibition of his works was opened at the Royal Palace of Caserta. The exhibition, with a monographic catalogue published by Charta, collected over seventy works from the last thirty years, retracing Bruno Donzelli’s artistic path with critical attention. In June 2002 an anthological exhibition was held at Palazzo dei Capitani in Ascoli Piceno, with the presentation of a big colour monograph of 220 pages. In 2006 a big exhibition was organised with his great works in the historic rooms of the Royal Belvedere San Leucio in Caserta. An exhibition curated by Luciano Caprile. 2007 was the year of his solo exhibition at the Maschio Angioino in Naples with an extensive monograph by Gillo Dorfles. In the last few years, many solo exhibitions were held in the main cities around the world.
