Now available at auction from Second Vintage

This classic 1970s Universal Geneve captures the essence of mid-century Swiss elegance, combining a sleek tonneau-profile case with a remarkably well-documented original bracelet. Powered by the reliable Caliber 42 manual-winding movement, this timepiece represents a pure, time-only aesthetic that has become highly sought after by vintage purists. What truly elevates this specific example is the presence of its original stainless steel bracelet, manufactured by the legendary Gay Frères and stamped for the first quarter of 1970, offering an exceptional degree of historical completeness for the discerning collector.

Brand: Universal Geneve
Movement: Manual winding, Caliber 42
Dial: Matte creamy eggshell with applied indices, showing noticeable age-related spotting and patina
Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown)
Case Material: Stainless steel
Production Year: 1970
Condition: Good vintage condition, presenting an honest and character-rich aesthetic

Dial and Hands
The dial presents a matte creamy eggshell base that has aged to develop a highly distinct, character-rich vintage patina. A close visual inspection reveals noticeable spotting, freckling, and moisture-related marks distributed across the surface, particularly concentrated toward the lower half and center. The dial furniture remains crisp, featuring applied faceted baton indices with black central inserts that provide excellent contrast. The typography is sharp, with a printed sans-serif Universal Geneve signature and the classic U logo positioned below the twelve o'clock marker. The time is indicated by a set of simple, well-preserved black stick hands that perfectly match the inserts on the indices, completing the minimalist aesthetic.

Case and Crystal
The 35mm stainless steel case features a soft tonneau or cushion-esque profile with hooded lugs, giving it a seamless presence on the wrist. The transition between the polished bezel and the sweeping case flanks retains good definition, though it exhibits honest signs of wear, surface marks, and hairline scratches consistent with regular vintage use. The watch retains its original fluted winding crown, which is proudly signed with the embossed U logo. The acrylic crystal protects the dial and shows minor surface wear. The reverse side features a plain brushed snap-on caseback with visible tool marks, while the interior of the caseback is beautifully finished with engine-turned perlage and stamped with the Universal Geneve shield and Acier Inoxydable hallmarks.

Movement
Inside the case beats the Universal Geneve Caliber 42, a robust and beautifully traditional manual-winding movement. The rhodium-plated bridges are clearly stamped with seventeen jewels, the Universal Geneve signature, and the caliber 42 designation. The movement displays honest cosmetic aging on the plates and bridges but remains mechanically intact. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. Timegrapher testing indicates a performance of +22 to +26 seconds per day.

Strap
The watch is fitted with its original period-correct stainless steel multi-link bracelet, a significant highlight of this lot. A close inspection of the folding clasp reveals the prestigious Gay Frères hallmark alongside the Universal Geneve signature, Brevete Steelinox, and a date stamp of 1 70, confirming its production in the first quarter of 1970. The exterior of the clasp is adorned with a striking, applied gold-tone U logo. The bracelet shows moderate stretch and wear consistent with its age and is sized to accommodate a wrist up to 19 cm.

Condition
This timepiece is presented in good vintage condition. The case remains structurally sound with normal handling marks and scratches typical of a 1970s watch. The dial is heavily patinated, displaying prominent spotting and age marks that clearly communicate its vintage journey. The Gay Frères bracelet remains fully functional and adds tremendous intrinsic value to the overall package.

Remarks
Finding a vintage Universal Geneve dress watch still paired with its original, date-stamped Gay Frères bracelet is a rare occurrence. The presence of the gold-tone applied logo on the clasp and the historical significance of the GF stamping make this an incredibly appealing package for collectors who value original hardware and documented provenance.

History
Universal Geneve is celebrated as one of the most important Swiss watchmakers of the 20th century, renowned for their sophisticated chronographs and elegant dress watches. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the brand embraced the era's shift toward integrated designs and tonneau cases, creating timepieces that were both modern and refined. Their partnership with Gay Frères, the premier bracelet manufacturer of the era who supplied the likes of Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, ensured that Universal Geneve watches were fitted with some of the finest steel bracelets ever produced, cementing their legacy in the annals of horological history.
