The Raksha masks are exotic demons that have been brilliantly carved with bulging eyes and colourful add-ons. The Gara Raksha Mask which is also known as the Gara Yaka is one of the many traditional masks that are used to ward off evil spirits and also used to recover patients from diseases in various purification ceremonies and exorcism rituals. However, now it’s simply used as a collectible artwork or for traditional dancing showcases. The Gara Mask which is said to be representing the king of the demons is painted in bold colours and consists of three serpent hoods as a crown. These are believe to help fight off malevolent forces that harm individuals and is considered an integral part of cultural ceremonies. Gara Yaka" (or Gara Yakka) refers to a specific type of Sri Lankan demon(Yaka/Yakshaya) represented by colorful wooden masks, used in traditional healing rituals (Tovil) to ward off evil spirits, sickness, and misfortune, often appearing as a humorous, benevolent figure with cobra hoods.
