Large Hand-Engraved Copper Tray, Tinned – 19th Century Object: Large ceremonial / decorative tray Material: Copper, interior tinned Technique: Hand-hammered and hand-engraved Origin: Central Asia / Caucasus Period: 19th century Dimensions & Weight Diameter: 67 cm Weight: 5.5 kg Description Impressive large copper tray, entirely hand-hammered and finely engraved. The interior shows a traditional tin coating, originally applied for protection and hygienic use, now partially worn and displaying a beautiful, authentic aged surface. The decoration consists of a central figurative medallion surrounded by concentric bands with stylised animal and geometric motifs, characteristic of metalwork from the Persian and Caucasian cultural regions. On the reverse, the tray retains its original copper suspension ring, indicating its intended use as a wall-mounted ceremonial or representative object. The back also shows old workshop or ownership incisions, typical for utilitarian and decorative metalware of the period. These marks are not decorative signatures but historical working or ownership marks and confirm the object’s age and authenticity. Condition Good historical condition Honest wear consistent with age and use Partial wear to the tinning, as expected Minor surface scratches, patina and tool marks No structural damage or repairs Remarks This is a large and heavy example, far exceeding typical functional trays, and was most likely produced as a representative or ceremonial piece. Its size, craftsmanship and preserved suspension ring make it particularly suitable as a wall object or interior statement piece.
