Pair of Dutch Art Deco Bookends – Haagse School – 1920s/30s – Red & Black Geometric Design
These bookends are a textbook example of the famous "Haagse School" (Hague School) style. The design features a bold architectural composition with strict geometric lines and a "stepped" volume. The combination of dark stained wood with vibrant red and deep black lacquered accents strongly reflects the influence of the Dutch "De Stijl" movement (reminiscent of the work of Gerrit Rietveld and Piet Mondrian).
A beautiful piece of Dutch design history that fits perfectly in both a classic Art Deco and a modern minimalist interior.
Key Features:
Origin: The Netherlands.
Period: Circa 1925 – 1935 (Art Deco / Modernism).
Style: Haagse School / Dutch Modernism.
Material: Dark stained solid wood (likely oak) with lacquered wooden elements.
Design: Asymmetrical, cubist forms with a striking color contrast.
Condition Report: The bookends are in good vintage condition with an authentic patina.
Structurally sound and sturdy.
There are signs of age and wear consistent with use, including some paint loss/chipping on the red lacquered sections and minor wear to the wooden edges (see photos).
The wood has a beautiful, aged deep tone.
