As a photographer, Don McCullin has traveled to the most remote regions of the earth. His particular sensitivity to people in extreme situations granted him access to tribes on the fringes of civilization. McCullin's book about Africa focuses on one such region, which has barely come into contact with the civilized world—but it is questionable how long this will remain the case. In 2003 and 2004, Don McCullin traveled from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to the Omo Valley, a river that flows south to the Sudanese border. Here he visited the tribal areas of the Surma, the Gheleb, the Dassanech, the Bume, the Erbore, the Bene, the Bodi, the Karo, the Hamar, and the Mursi.
