A refined Chinese scholar’s rock (gongshi 供石) of the Ying stone (Yingdeshi 英德石) type, naturally formed and appreciated as a miniature horizontal mountain landscape (hengshan 横山). The stone is characterised by a richly textured surface displaying the prized “wrinkled” (zhou 皱) quality, creating a dynamic interplay of ridges and recesses reminiscent of eroded mountain terrain.

The stone exhibits a brownish-grey tone, which deepens to a rich dark grey when moistened—an admired feature of Ying stones. The extremities show a smooth, natural patina, indicating prolonged handling and appreciation, consistent with its use as a contemplative object in the scholar’s studio. The underside remains fully natural and irregular, preserving the integrity of the stone in its original state.

The rock is presented on a well-fitted, simply carved wooden stand with four low feet, complementing the form without distraction.

Scholar’s rocks such as this were valued for their ability to evoke vast natural landscapes in miniature, serving as objects of meditation and aesthetic contemplation within the Chinese literati tradition.
