Born in Sheffield, he first worked as a butcher before studying Fine Art at Saint Martin's College, London. In 1993 he served as Artist in Residence at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, producing works that captured backstage life and performers. His art often explores the tension between isolation and social ritual, evoking the mood of early 20th-century realists such as Dick Ket and Carel Willink.
