Unknown - Quran - 1840

A bi-folio from an early, but damaged, C19th Koran, scribed in Kashmir. The leaf contains the final verses of the Meccan Chapter 13, Ar-Ra'd (Thunder) on the right and upper left folio, together with the Chapter heading of the subsequent chapter, Ibrahim (Abraham), and v1-4. The final verses of Chapter 13 provide a warning to the pagans to take heed of the message that Muhammad brings to them about God's all knowing nature and his ultimate power to decide their fate, with the first verses of Chapter 14 continuing the theme through the parables of Abraham and his fight with the Meccan's to stop idolising false gods and turn instead to Allah. The verses are scribed in black ink naskh script, within a rectangular box surrounded by solid gold trim. Several plain gold roundels mark out the verses and there are devotional markings in red providing guidance to the reader. The header is a lovely example of decorative Kashmiri art, with the title sitting within a god cartouche, with two celestial blue arabesque floral book ends, framed in red. A gold and red floral device embellishes the top corners of each folio. This is a clean, well preserved and interesting bi-folio. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
