Unknown - Qur'an - India - 1825

A fine bi-fold from a Qur'an written in N.India/Kashmir C1825. It consists of two neatly scribed pages in black Naskh script. Between he lines of Quranic script sits Persian commentary in red offering the devotee additional context and guidance in prayer. The right folio has an illuminated chapter heading with cartouche book ends written in white thuluth script. It also contains a decorative, and quite complex, illuminated marginal juz marking the 110th verse of the chapter. THere is heavy commentary in the margins of both folios which provide context for the reader and may indeed have been personal observations of the owner. The manuscript is from the final verses of chapter 21, Al-Anbiya (The Prophets) and v:1-4 of the subsequent Medinian chapter, 22, Al-Hadj (The Pilgrimage), together with its header. The final verses of chapter 21, state that: the Prophet Muhammad was sent as a mercy to all worlds (mankind, jinn, and all that exists); commands the Prophet to inform his people that he has been divinely instructed, and asks them to submit to the will of the one God (Allah); states that if they refuse, they should be warned that a decision is to be made, and the timing of it is unknown; and add that Allah knows all things, spoken and hidden, and that the situation may be a test for both the people and the Prophet. V1:4 of chapter 22 (which recounts the pilgrimage rituals), start with the horrors of Judgement Day and recounts that there ar still people dispute God's knowledge and follow the devil. This sets the tone for the pilgrimage. Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to prepare the article, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing. Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
