On the back is a three-character Sanskrit inscription
This finely painted thangka centers on Shakyamuni Buddha, depicted seated in vajrasana atop a lotus pedestal. His right hand touches the earth in the bhumisparsha mudra, while the left rests in his lap holding a begging bowl—an iconic representation of the Buddha's moment of enlightenment. The figure is adorned in deep red robes, with a serene expression and a green nimbus framed by stylized lotus petals and a mandala-like architecture.
Surrounding the central figure are one hundred miniature Buddhas arranged in a meticulously ordered grid. Each repeats the central image in posture, gesture, and form, representing a visual litany of the “Hundred Buddhas,” a motif associated with purification, longevity, and the accumulation of merit. These thangkas were often used in ritual contexts or as devotional aids in temples and monastic settings.
Painted with mineral pigments on coarse-woven cloth, the thangka retains vivid coloration and compositional integrity. Minor staining and edge wear are consistent with age and ritual use, enhancing its authenticity and devotional character. Thangkas of this type gained popularity in the 19th century for both private practice and ceremonial use, offering a compelling blend of spiritual purpose and artistic craftsmanship.

Overall in good condition. Some natural cracks on the surface due to age. Some brown stains on the outer mounted cloth. No restoration.
